Athletic Training & Exercise Science: Core AT Journals

This guide presents resources and tips useful for students in Athletic Training and Exercise Sciences classes. There is also basic information about places to find statistics, images, and maps.

Core Journals

Core journals refer to the journals within a given specialty that are the most important ones for that specialty. They are frequently among the most well-known journals: the most often read, consulted, or cited by other researchers, educators, and practitioners within that specialty.

HINT: Core journals are also good journals for students to consult who are looking for research articles in a given speciality!

Core Journals in Athletic Training

These are the core 6 journals for the field of athletic training as identified in a 2007 JMLA article (Journal of the Medical Library Association), entitled: "Mapping the Literature of Athletic Training" by authors Frances Delwiche, MLIS and Ellen Hall, MALS.

(Journals are listed alphabetically. Links lead to journal access through FGCU Library, if available.)

  1. The American Journal of Sports Medicine (official publication of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine)
  2. Journal of Athletic Training
  3. JOSPT (acroynm stands for Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy; the official journal of the American Physical Therapy Association's Orthopaedic Section and Sports Physical Therapy Section)
  4. Journal of Sport Rehabilitation
  5. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine)
  6. Physical Therapy (official journal of the American Physical Therapy Association)

Where can I find the core PT journals?

Journal Tips:

  • For electronic/online journals: Remember to check the year/issue coverage for the eJournal! (The library may have the journal electronically, but not in the year you need.)
  • Don't be surprised if the same journal is found in more than one database. But again: check the year/issue coverage dates as different databases sometimes subscribe to different years of that journal.
  • If the journal is not available online, you can search the FGCU Library Catalog to see if we have a print copy on the shelf.  (Yes, journals still exist in print...)
  • If the journal is not available electronically or in print, you can request specific articles within a journal via InterLibrary Loan (aka Illiad.)

In addition to the 6 core AT journals (see box to left), 40 other important journals for AT were identified. (In cases where journals have changed their names, the most recent name is given.)
